Boston Public Library
Renewing Materials

Borrowing and Circulating Information

The library allows five renewals for most borrowed items unless other people are waiting to check them out. (Some other restrictions may apply.) To avoid accruing overdue fines, please renew your items on or in advance of the due date.

If your borrower account has accrued fines/fees of $10.00 or more, if your item is more than 30 days overdue, or if another patron has placed a hold on the item, the renewal request will be denied.

Renewing Material In Person

You may renew materials at either Borrower Services Desk in the Central Library or at any of the neighborhood branches. You must have your library card with you. You do not need to bring the material with you to renew it.

Renewing Material By Phone

You may phone 617-859-5908 – our automated system – 24 hours a day, seven days a week to renew material. You may also phone the Central Library or any of our neighborhood branches during library hours.

To renew by phone, you must have your library card number and your PIN when you call to renew materials.

When speaking to staff, you need your library card number.

Renewing Material Online

You may use the BPL's online catalog to renew materials (see the catalog Help page for more information). You will need a PIN number to renew books online. For more information about PINs, click here.
