Borrowing and Circulating Information

Automatic Renewal

To help you save time, most of what you borrow at Boston Public Library will automatically renew up to 5 times. Exceptions include:

  • E-books, streaming and downloadable media
  • Museum passes, laptops, and materials that may be subject to shorter loan periods
  • Items borrowed from the Roxbury Community College
  • Items obtained from a library outside of BPL's lending network through interlibrary loan
  • Overdue items
  • Items with holds from other users
  • User accounts with fines/fees accrued to $10 or more and/or any other blocks

When automatic renewal is not applicable, you may be able to renew items in-person, by phone, or online:

Renewing Material In Person

Renewals can be done at the Borrower Services Desk in the Central Library or any of the neighborhood branches. You'll need your library card but not the item being renewed.

Renewing Material By Phone

Phone 617-859-5908 24 hours a day, seven days a week to renew some materials. You may also phone the Central Library or any of our neighborhood branches during library hours.

To renew by phone, you must have your library card number and your PIN when you call to renew materials.

Renewing Material Online

BPL's online catalog can be used to renew some materials (see the catalog Help page for more information). You will need a PIN number to renew books online. For more information about PINs, click here.
