Requesting Material
Borrowing and Circulating Information


Online   You may place requests yourself online from your home or office using the Metro Boston Library Network (MBLN) catalog. You must have a valid library card and a PIN to place requests. You may choose to have a pick-up location of Copley or any Boston Public Library branch. When the item you have requested becomes available, you will be sent a notice by phone, mail or email, depending on how you have requested this service. If you wish to place requests for material that the Boston Public Library does not own, please see a librarian at any of our locations.
Central Library
You may place requests yourself at any of the Public Access Terminals in the Central Library.You must have a valid library card and a PIN to place requests. You may also place requests with the assistance of the librarians in each department. You may choose to have a pick-up location of Copley or any Boston Public Library branch. When the item you have requested becomes available, you will be sent a notice by phone, mail or email, depending on how you have requested this service. If you wish to place requests for material that the Boston Public Library does not own, please see a librarian or use the "suggest a purchase" form on our online catalog.

Research Library (McKim Building)

Research Library material cannot be checked out and must be used in the building. If you wish to use Research Library material, fill out a request form, available in all Research Library departments, and take it to theBook Delivery desk. You must have a valid library card to use Research Library material. Materials are generally delivered to you within 15-30 minutes after you have submitted the request form, unless the item is in remote storage. If you wish to place requests for material that the Boston Public Library does not own, please see a librarianor use the "suggest a purchase" form on our online catalog.

Neighborhood Branches

You may place requests yourself at any of the Public Access Terminals in the neighborhood branches. There are several catalogs available on-line, make sure that the catalog you are using is the Metro Boston Library Network (MBLN) catalog. You must have a valid library card and a PIN to place requests. You may also place requests with the assistance of the librarians in each branch. You may choose to have a pick-up location of any Boston Public Library branch or Copley (the Johnson Building). When the item you have requested becomes available, you will be sent a notice by phone, mail or email, depending on how you have requested this service. If you wish to place requests for material that the Boston Public Library does not own, please see a librarian or use the "suggest a purchase" form on our online catalog.
