Children’s/Youth Services

Internship Location:
Current openings at the following locations:
- Central Library, Young Adult Room
- Charlestown Branch
- Honan-Allston Branch
- Parker Hill Branch
SUMMARY: Internship placement in youth services at the central
library or in one of the Boston Public Library’s twenty seven neighborhood
branches. The intern will shadow the
children’s or young adults’ librarian to experience first hand the role of
youth services in a busy urban library system.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The intern will observe and assist children’s and/or young
adults’ librarians with the following:
- Programming
for children of all ages
- Collection
development
- Baby/toddler/preschool
story hours
- Readers
advisory
- Homework
help (print and virtual resources)
- Assistance
with library computers and the internet
- Outreach
at schools or community events
- Creating
flyers, book lists, bulletin boards, displays
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently
enrolled in a degree seeking under graduate or graduate level program.
- Course
work and interest in Children’s Literature/Librarianship
- Interest
in working with children of all ages
- General
working knowledge of libraries
- Excellent
customer service skills
- Strong
communication skills
- Strong
computer skills
- All
interns are subject to the City’s Criminal Offender Record Information
(CORI) policy and may not begin an internship until they have successfully
cleared CORI.
SCHEDULE (number of
hours/week): May vary depending on
internship guidelines but not to exceed 15-20 hours/week.
