About Us
The Special Collections Department facilitates discovery and fosters public engagement with rare, distinctive, and culturally significant materials held by Boston Public Library. To fulfill this mission, Special Collections staff acquire, describe, preserve, and interpret our collections for the people of Boston, the Commonwealth, and communities of researchers and learners everywhere. We are committed to sustainable, responsive, user-centered stewardship while providing equitable access to the collections and services of the department. BPL special collections are available for the study and enjoyment of all.
Special Collections is a team of over twenty department members with specialized expertise. Our team members are curators and catalogers, archivists and library assistants, conservators and preservation specialists; all dedicated to stewardship of BPL’s exceptional collections of rare books, artwork, archives, photographs, music, maps, sculpture, and our unique historical structures. We are committed to caring for these materials and making them more discoverable by users like you, now and into the future.
Users near and far engage with Special Collections through in-person visits, online browsing, and research. Authors and artists draw upon Special Collections for information and inspiration. Students, scholars, and independent researchers delve into our collections to further their discoveries. Patrons of all ages, guided by their curiosity, participate in crowd-sourced transcription projects, explore digital collections, write to our staff with their questions, and request material in-person. In our newly renovated space, educators and their students will be able to encounter collections in the new classroom, and all are welcome to make an appointment for the reading room.
