Behind the Scenes at the BPL: Bailey Watroba, Senior Public Relations Associate

Meet Bailey Watroba, Senior Public Relations Associate in the Communications Department! This post is part of our "Behind the Scenes at the BPL" blog series featuring just some of the humans that keep Boston Public Library running.

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio area. I go back and visit family often, and root for Cleveland sports teams, but Boston is now my home!

What do you do in your job day-to-day?

As the Senior Public Relations Associate at the Boston Public Library, I get to share the BPL’s story with the world every day. I create and execute media and content strategies that highlight all the amazing programs, services, and resources the library offers. I also handle all things media-related—whether it's coordinating interviews, responding to press inquiries, or managing filming requests involving staff or library spaces. Working closely with librarians and community partners, I help craft engaging stories that showcase the library’s impact and make sure people know that the BPL is truly "Free to All."

Can you share with our readers some of your favorite books and authors?

I’m a big fan of Dolly Alderton—her writing is funny, sharp, and deeply relatable. Everything I Know About Love is one of my favorite memoirs, and Good Material was just as brilliant in capturing the messy, bittersweet realities of relationships and growing up.

I also love The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. It’s one of those books that sticks with you, and I’m lucky enough to own a signed copy, which makes it even more special.

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is another favorite. I first read it in high school, and it left such an impression that I picked up my own copy years later while visiting Galway, Ireland. It’s one of those books that means something different every time you revisit it.

Most recently, The Briar Club by Kate Quinn was my favorite read of 2024. She did a great job of blending historical fiction with compelling, complex characters, keeping me hooked after each chapter.

What is your favorite resource at the Boston Public Library?

One of the best resources at the BPL has to be the digital newspaper and magazine collection. It gives everyone free access to reliable news, in-depth journalism, and a huge variety of publications from around the world—something that can be expensive or hard to get otherwise. Whether you’re staying informed on current events, diving into historical archives, or just catching up on your favorite magazines, it’s an incredible way to make sure people have the information they need. In a time when access to quality news matters more than ever, having these resources available to all is a game changer.

What are you passionate about outside the library?

I’m a big fan of exploring Boston’s food scene! I love trying different restaurants across the city, whether it’s a buzzy new spot or a hidden neighborhood gem. I use the Beli app to keep track of places I’ve been, rank my favorites, and save restaurants I’m excited to try next. It’s a great way to experience different cuisines and discover new parts of the city along the way. I’m always on the lookout for great recommendations—there’s nothing better than finding a new go-to spot!
