Behind the Scenes at the BPL: Sara Komorowski, Assistant Events Manager

Meet Sara Komorowski, Assistant Events Manager at the Boston Public Library! This post is part of our "Behind the Scenes at the BPL" blog series featuring just some of the humans that keep Boston Public Library running.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Long Island, New York, but my parents live in Midcoast Maine now, and that’s currently my home base. Splitting the difference and living in Boston is a perfect fit for me!

What do you do in your job day-to-day?

I spend the majority of my time writing contracts, creating schedules, and communicating updates for the weddings we host at the Central Library in Copley Square almost every weekend. There are a lot of teams that need to work together to make a spectacular event happen, and it’s my job to make sure that everyone has all the correct and updated information.

Weddings at the BPL are a truly magical experience, but it takes a lot of time, effort, and organization to transform the Library into a wedding venue. At the end of the night, we must put everything back in its place, so we can open again the next morning to serve the public. Having a plan and communicating that plan well makes everything run more smoothly.

Can you share with our readers some of your favorite books and authors?

Some of my recent favorites include Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, Know My Name by Chanel Miller, and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. I will read anything that Celeste Ng, Ann Patchett, Jon Krakauer, or Patrick Radden Keefe writes, and I can’t wait to get my hands on Yaa Gyasi’s next book.

I have been reading a lot of memoirs recently, and it’s always a pleasant surprise when the (often celebrity) author turns out to be an even better writer than expected (most recently, this happened to me with I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy).

What is your favorite food?

A bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel from Brooklyn (toasted, of course).

What is your favorite resource at the Boston Public Library?

More people need to know about Kanopy; this online streaming platform, which you can access for free with your BPL card, has more films that I want to watch than I was expecting. It’s a fabulous resource and an underrated one in my opinion.

I also want to shout out the alcoves we have in the Kirstein Business Library & Innovation Center (KBLIC) at the Central Library. Reservable for up to two hours per group per day, they are a great way to take a call or have a small meeting in a private space at the BPL for free.

What are you passionate about outside the library?

I love being outside, and my weekends are usually spent hiking, skiing, or swimming in the ocean. I am currently working my way through visiting all 63 of our National Parks (38 down, 25 to go). I love watching women’s soccer, and I am excited for the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) team that’s slated to start playing in Boston in 2026!
